Ongea means speak in Kiswahili. Everything happens on your device: the voices run inside this browser tab, so nothing you type is sent anywhere.
Every language has voices of its own, made from people speaking it, so Kiswahili sounds like Kiswahili. Type in any of the five and the voice follows; pick a voice and it stays the one for its language.
The first time you use a voice, it is fetched once and kept by your browser, so it speaks at once next time: about 92 MB for all the English voices together, and 20 to 77 MB for each of the others.
Voices
- English: Kokoro-82M, Apache 2.0.
- Kiswahili, Deutsch, Français and Polski: Piper voices, each under its recording's licence (Thorsten, Kerstin and Gilles CC0; Élise CC BY 4.0; Jessica and Pierre CC BY-SA 4.0; Ramona, Eva and Karlsson from M-AILABS; Gosia, Darek and Mateusz CC0; Baraka from the Kiswahili TTS dataset, CC BY 4.0), pronounced by espeak-ng, GPL 3.
- Juma, Lukas and Antoine: Meta MMS, CC BY-NC 4.0, for non-commercial use.
New voices
The library breeds new English voices by mixing the ones listeners rate well. A rating stores only which voice and which way: never your text, your audio or who you are.
